Luís Simões graduated in Sculpture in 2007 from ESAD in Caldas da Rainha. Since then, his creative process has been closely tied to foraging — gathering natural materials for his artistic creations as well as for producing medicinal balms, reflecting a deep connection with nature and its cycles.
Since 2011, he has been working as an Art Handler for contemporary art exhibitions, bringing technical precision and sensitivity to the installation and care of artworks.
For the past four years, Luís has been living in São Luís, Odemira, where he also works as a carpenter. Whether through sculpture, craft, or woodwork, his practice is grounded in a tactile, intuitive relationship with materials and place.

Nathan Van’t Hof is a master woodworker, educator, and founder of Etz Lada’at – a unique school for traditional woodworking rooted in hand tool craftsmanship and respect for natural materials. Originally from the Netherlands, Nathan studied furniture making and restoration, later teaching and developing curriculum at leading institutions like HMC Amsterdam and De Schrijn College. In 2009, he returned to Israel with his family and established a carpentry school and workshop in a renovated historic structure on Kibbutz Beit HaEmek, now located at Kibbutz Ashdot Ya’akov Ichud.
Deeply inspired by the philosophies of master woodworker James Krenov, Nathan’s approach is centered on working with intention, care, and attention to detail – treating each piece of wood as a living material with its own story to tell. Through Etz Lada’at, Nathan has helped cultivate a community of artisan woodworkers who value tradition, sustainability, and creativity.
At the HIM Dub Festival, Nathan invites you to reconnect with your hands and the natural world in his Spoon Carving Workshop. Over the course of 1.5 hours, participants will learn the fundamentals of green wood carving – shaping freshly cut wood using simple, traditional tools. Each participant receives a pre-formed blank and guidance to carve their own wooden spoon – revealing the hidden form within the material. This meditative, accessible practice is suitable for complete beginners and offers a gateway to the rewarding world of woodcraft. The workshop runs three times during the festival and is limited to 10 participants per session.
Carving with green wood is more than a skill – it’s a calming, sensory-rich experience that brings you closer to nature, your tools, and your creative self.
